Overview

You can create a single, combined Pivot Interactives class to connect all of your sections to, or you can create individual classes to connect to each section.

Do NOT give out a class key or a class join link! This lets students bypass connecting their Canvas accounts to Pivot Interactives. Our integration automatically places them into the correct Pivot Interactives class.

Step 1: Create a new Canvas assignment or edit an existing one

  1. Click Assignments and +Assignment. Or edit an existing assignment.

  2. Scroll to Submission Type and select External Tool.

  3. Click Find

  4. Scroll through the list and click Pivot Interactives,

  5. Click Select.

  6. (Optional) The first time you do this, you'll be prompted to log into your Pivot Interactives account.

Next up is creating your Pivot Interactives classes using one of the following two options:

Step 2: Creating a Pivot Interactives class for each Canvas section

If you do not see the option below to customize how sections are connected, then your school needs to update their Canvas configuration settings for Pivot Interactives. Direct your school's IT folk to this help article for instructions on how to do that.

  1. Click Yes, customize how sections are connected

  2. A list of your Canvas sections will populate. Click Add Pivot Class + for each section to create a Pivot Interactives class.

  3. Fill in the information for each Pivot Interactives class you need to create.

    1. Name - name the Pivot Interactives class whatever you'd like.

    2. End Date - choose the date after which the class will end. Students will be automatically dropped from the class 30 days after the end date. If needed, you can change the end date after the class is created.

    3. Subject, Grade Level, and Instructional Level - enter the information appropriate for your sections.

  4. Click the appropriate Pivot Interactives class to choose which one connects to a specific Canvas section.

  5. Click Connect Classes at the bottom of the page.

Step 3: Connect the Canvas assignment to a Pivot Interactives one

  1. If you previously assigned an activity, then click the assignment name, then Connect Assignment.

  2. Otherwise, click Add Pivot Assignment

  3. Find the activity you wish to assign in your library, then click Assign.

  4. (Optional) If you've not added any activities to your personal library yet, then click Pivot Interactives Library. Use the filters to find an activity. Click Preview to open a new tab and see the activity as a student would. Click Copy & Assign to copy the activity to your library and assign it to your sections.

  5. Make sure you've set the appropriate due dates, then click Assign. Note: due dates don't carry over to Canvas, so make sure you set them on the Canvas assignment as well.

  6. Click the name of the assignment you just created, then click Connect Assignment

  7. You'll be taken back to the Canvas assignment. To finish up, click Select

  8. Scroll down and click either Save or Save and Publish.

(Alternative) Creating a combined Pivot Interactives class

Create a single Pivot Interactives class for each single Canvas course that appears on your Canvas dashboard, even if that class is split into multiple sections. Grades will still sync to the appropriate section within the Canvas course. If your Canvas course doesn't have multiple sections within it, then you will still create Pivot Interactives classes this way.

Once you've created your Pivot Interactives classes, you're now ready to link a Canvas assignment to a Pivot Interactives assignment.
